Kumiko Coaster Course

Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt
— John Muir

Learn the art of Kumiko, a delicate wood work technique developed in the Asuka Era (600-700AD) in Japan. Kumiko are repeat patterns put together with such high precision that they do not require any nails to secure individual wood pieces together.

We will start off with a short introduction of how this technique works and tools we will be using for the day. You will then begin crafting your own piece under close supervision. The hemp leaf Asanoha pattern is chosen for this workshop. Absolutely no prior experience required, we will be providing all materials and tools.

Option:

This course runs for half a day. Extend your day with us at Mokko Wood Studio - and take a step further in your journey of woodworking.

We combine our signature Kumiko Coaster Course with the basics of fine box making into a full day experience in the Kumiko Keepsake Box Course. You will get a glimpse into the world of fine woodworking as you learn to build a mitered box with a lid inset with elegant Kumiko.

Details of the full day experience can be found here.
