Kumiko Keepsake Box Course

In this Kumiko Keepsake Box Course, we combine our signature Kumiko Course with the basics of fine box making into a full day experience. You will get a glimpse into the world of fine woodworking as you learn to build a mitered box with a lid inset with elegant Kumiko.

Putting together a box can be as simple as nailing 5 pieces of wood together.

Between that and building an exquisite box, however, lies a world of a difference. A box distinguished by well-fitted joinery and seamless grain that brings out the natural beauty of the tree requires great care and attention to otherwise overlooked details. Learn about the basic components of a lidded box, how they interact with each other, the joinery used to secure them and the tools and techniques necessary to work the wood.

Kumiko is a delicate wood work technique developed in the Asuka Era (600-700AD) in Japan. They are repeat patterns put together with such high precision that they do not require any nails to secure individual wood pieces together. The hemp leaf Asanoha pattern is chosen for this workshop.

We will begin with an introduction to box joinery, Kumiko and the tools we will be using for the day. You will then begin crafting your own piece under close supervision. Take home with you woodworking knowledge and techniques, as well as a box that has ample space for keepsakes and adds a touch of Japanese elegance to your home.

Absolutely no prior experience required. We will be providing all materials and tools.
