Shoji Watch Box with Asanoha in Walnut
This watch box is a birthday present. It’s a present from our client to her boss of 18 years! Due to Covid19, she can’t celebrate with him this year as they’re based across borders. But sometimes both time and circumstance can have their way of bringing people together. Each drawer has a different word engraved of a value that describes our client’s boss. Often there’s just as much joy in giving as in receiving, so we hope our client’s boss enjoys receiving this watch box as much as she enjoys gifting it to him.
The box itself is made of walnut with ash strips, the drawers of cherry and pine, and the Kumiko from bass wood.
The Asanoha (hemp leaf) is a traditional Japanese Kumiko pattern that is named after its likeness to the hemp leaf. This Asanoha in the middle sliding door is the smallest and thinnest one we’ve made, which meant that cutting the pieces by hand required more focus and precision than usual.
One of the qualities associated with the Asanoha is resilience - something we wish upon our client’s boss.
The dovetail joints offer added strength and beauty to the box.
