Spice Box

A spice box for a chef - made of mainly beech and some cherry.

If you look at the four sides of the box, you might realize that the wood grain is running. This is because we used the same board of wood - to give the box a continuity that we find pleasing to the eye. Furthermore, we wanted to pick a piece of wood that has cathedrals (those arrow-like patterns) to give the piece more character.

The structure of the box is given strength by the splines (made of cherry) that you see at the corners of the box. Simply gluing these joints isn’t strong enough, and the splines add much needed stability, but also some beauty.

The horizontal space in the box was made to hold some scooping spoons for the different spices.

Given that this spice box has fifteen smaller boxes inside it, this project required a bit more time and patience. The grid that holds the small boxes in place was particularly tricky to get just right. We’re not sure if our customer has fifteen different spices to put into each box, but should he need to, he’ll have the space for it.
