Javad Tizmaghz

At the age of 13, he began working with wood where he got his start as a sculptor. He got a degree in design and worked as a designer and photographer before he began experimenting with furniture making in 2013. Over time, he developed a style influenced by his Zen practice and interest in Japanese traditions and culture.

Later, he travelled to Japan to study under Takami Kawai San of Kyoto's Suikoushya woodworking academy. After returning, he founded Jiawood to continue making furniture. He primarily makes traditional cabinets, tables and sliding Shoji doors.

He has developed a work philosophy based on three spirits that must always work in unison. The spirit of wood, the spirit of the tool, and the spirit of the craftsman. Understanding the natural character of wood, the life and elegance of his pieces are considerably extended. By understanding his tools he is able to create with precision while remaining safe and joyful.

His designs are referenced on historical pieces and patterns found in nature. His construction process begins with careful consideration of wood type, density, colour, grain pattern, orientation, seasonal movements, and natural characteristics. The joinery he uses is based on tradition, correct application, budget and how it allows the wood to move naturally while remaining strong and stable. He finishes every surface with a Kanna (a Japanese hand plane) to maintain and showcase the nature beauty of wood in the best possible way.

He is currently focused on developing a series of small tea cabinets to be exhibiting in Malaysia and Singapore.
