Andon Lamp Course

In this Andon Lamp Course, we combine our signature Kumiko Coaster Course with the crafting of an Andon lamp into a full day experience.

The Andon lamp is a traditional Japanese lantern, meant to be used in interior spaces. Often adorned with kumiko patterns backed by washi paper, the lamp provides soft and diffused light, creating a warm and restful atmosphere in any space.

Kumiko is a delicate wood work technique developed in the Asuka Era (600-700AD) in Japan. They are repeat patterns put together with such high precision that they do not require any nails to secure individual wood pieces together. The hemp leaf Asanoha pattern is chosen for this workshop.

We will begin with an introduction to the joinery used in crafting the Andon lamp and kumiko. You will also learn about the Japanese hand tools we will be using for the day. You will then begin crafting your own piece under close supervision. Take home with you woodworking knowledge and techniques, as well as a beautiful lamp that adds a touch of Japanese elegance and warmth to your home.

Absolutely no prior experience required. We will be providing all materials and tools.

Approximate Dimensions: H24cm x L21cm x W21cm

For students interested in learning to build the Andon lamp from scratch and cut all the joinery by hand, the Kumiko Foundation Course is for you.
