African Mahogany Slab

This slab came from a local tree that was felled on Upper Bukit Timah Road. The wood itself is that of African Mahogany, commonly found growing along roadsides in Singapore. This particular slab is rather unique with its figured grain. The trestles (legs) are made of beech with leather cut-outs at the top and bottom of each leg.

It took us one week to flatten the slab and fill all the holes and cracks with epoxy - a laborious and repetitive task. When sanding the slab, the surface looked pale and lifeless. How dramatically it came to life once we spread the finish over the surface!

Another thing we love about this slab are its live edges. Having stripped the bark, we used a wire brush to smoothen the underlying surface without distorting the original shape too much. The result is a ruggedness that reflects more closely the original state of the tree.

The legs themselves were shaped and rounded using the table saw, multiple spokeshaves and a plane.

This beautiful cross-section of a tree is now being used as a desk in our customers home.
